Understanding CLIA Requirements for Physicians and Laboratory Professionals

The individual’s, who are not pathologists but wish to serve as directors of moderate- or high-complexity laboratories, must complete a 20-hour CME or CEU course covering laboratory director responsibilities. Additional experience requirements must also be met.

Current Director’s must also comply with the new regulations for maintaining CEU’s.  Additionally, Director’s “must be onsite at least once every 6 months”.   If a Director is listed for more than one laboratory, evidence of onsite visits is required.

CLIA Condition-Level Deficiency: What It Means

A CLIA condition-level deficiency indicates noncompliance serious enough to affect a laboratory's overall ability to meet a CLIA condition, not just an isolated citation. This is more serious than a standard-level finding and typically requires a more comprehensive response. If your laboratory has been cited at the condition level, how you respond to CLIA deficiencies matters significantly, since the regulatory posture and potential consequences are greater than with standard-level findings.
